New Star Trek Movie Catapults Trek Popularity - Entertainment - Movies

Many in Hollywood have been surprised by the success of the latest Star Trek movie. In its first 10 days it has grossed approximately $150 million nearly $50 million more than any Star Trek movie has ever grossed in its entire theatrical run. The final tally of the film's box office receipts indicates that it will finish up with over $350 million in world wide box office receipts. And when the new Star Trek DVD is released that is sure to smash the record for the Star Trek franchise as well.

A note to remember about this Star Trek's box office haul is that overseas receipts were especially weak for a big budget smash hit. There are several reasons for this but the most simple is that Star Trek, with the exception of Germany, has never been a particularly profitable franchise in Europe. For instance the new Tom Hanks/Ron Howard DaVinci Code thriller earned more than double in Europe what the new Star Trek flick did despite the fact that the Star Trek killed it stateside. The other thing that Star Trek did not have in its favor was a big box office star like Tom Hanks, who sells a lot of tickets abroad. So, with out any major stars and a questionable brand name the film still grossed more than $100 million overseas.

One can fully expect future Star Trek films to earn more in those markets since this film was especially well received. If Star Trek can get it's overseas numbers up to that of a typical US blockbuster then we could be seeing Star Trek sequels for a decade or more like Harry Potter.

Equally surprising is the fact that the new Star Trek movie has been a critical success as well. While some of the Star Trek films have received excellent reviews, none have been quite as roundly praised as this new feature. Perhaps the best reviewed film to date, before Star Trek, was Star Trek Wrath of Khan which was released in 1982. While Wrath of Khan received a tremendous critical applause and was, for its time a theatrical hit, it was nowhere the nearly unanimous success with critics that Star Trek has been. So where does this leave the franchise?

Star Trek is nearly assured to make money for its parent studio Paramount Pictures. The film was budgeted at approximately $150 million and is likely to make substantially more in world wide release. Once you add in the DVD and merchandise sales it becomes apparent that this film will easily push itself into the black. What this means is that it is a near certainty that more Star Trek films will be produced in coming years.

Early reports indicate that the writers of Star Trek have reached an agreement to write sequel. J.J. Abrams has also been retained to produce. And while it is uncertain at this moment, Abrams may direct again as well.

As a result of this recent film, Star Trek has seen its popularity soar as old fans have rediscovered the franchise and young fans have learned about it for the first time. What is certain is that the Star Trek seems likely to live long and prosper.

And this is great news for Star Trek fans who have been taken for granted by Paramount studios for too long. With a fresh, hot new franchise it nearly certain that Star Trek will continue its run for a very long time.
