Beauty Lies in the Eyes of Beholders - Society - Culture

Does beauty really lies in the eyes of beholders? I do really think so, especially between the West and the Chinese. When the westerners look at the Chinese beauties and appreciate them, they definitely have a different perspectives and standards.

I recalled a particular incident when I was on a business trip to Germany with my female engineer. We were in Germany for a few months for a joint development project. After a few days, we got to know his German counterparts (most of them are men) better. One day, when I was having lunch alone with 2 German male managers. They threw a curious question to me "Your female colleague, she is one of the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. Can you introduce her to us?" and then one of them said "Are all the Chinese girls in China as beautiful as her?" They had indeed thrown a bombshell to me as I did not really know how to answer them. In my eyes and many Chinese eyes, my female colleague is definitely not a classic beauty. She has a studious look wearing glasses with small eyes but she had long straight hairs and fair skin. There are many such cases where the Westerners have a different perception of Chinese beauty.

To illustrate this example, I would use the Chinese movie stars in which most people will be familiar with. Below are the famous Asian stars and model, make a comparison.

Lucy Liu -Hollywood star

LV Yan-Top Chinese Supermodel in Europe

Zhao Wei-Top Chinese Movie Star

Zhou Xun-Chinese Movie Star

To view their picture, please go to my blog laopengyou at wordpressFrom a Chinese perspective, Lucy Liu (Hollywood movie star acted in "Charlie's Angels") and Lv Yan (Top Chinese model in Europe) are not typical beauties with their small eyes, straight long hair, large mouth and thick lips and freckles on their faces.

Take Lv Yan for example, she is the classic tale of a young ugly duckling from a small poor village in China who become an European based Chinese Supermodel in Europe which is a shocking news to the Chinese. According to traditional Chinese concepts, Lv Yan, now China's most famous supermodel, is not pretty at all. Some say the narrow-eyed, flat-nosed and thick-lipped girl is even considered ugly. Nevertheless, that does not stop her from shining on the global catwalks.

In definition, Chinese beauties must have big eyes, small mouth with thin lips and freckle-free faces, those with fair skins are added quality. (Therefore, skin whitening products are selling very well especially in East Asia). Chinese movie stars like Zhao Wei and Zhou Xun are classical beauty of China.

Hence, in "Mulan" the animated movie, the leading character "Mulan" was drawn to have a distinct "Chinese" features with small eyes, large mouth with thick lips and silky long hair. These clearly shows the stereotyping and perception of Chinese beauties in the eyes of the westerners.

In the contrary, Chinese can appreciate the Western beauties like Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Megan Fox etc because Chinese are able to use a different perspective in looking at them. In fact, some Asian ladies wants to transform their face into them through cosmetic surgery. Maybe a beauty such as actress Maggie Q "Mission Impossible 3 (who is of Chinese and Western parentage) is the answer to the word "beautiful" accepted by both the East and the West.
